Chapter Thirteen

The man wearing the knight’s helmet was looking at Falon like they had some sort of history. “You dare to bring outsiders into our ancestral home, my son?”

“I... I tried to stop them, Father,” the Inquisitor sputtered.

Going by the sneer, his beloved father wasn’t in the mood for excuses. “Tried?! There is success and there is failure. There is no ’try’! Have you still not learned?!”

At those words, Falon totally lost what little control he had left, backpedaling past Anna until his back hit the nearest mirror wall. The knight tried marching towards him, but Odon got in his way, brandishing his sword blade.

“Not another step if you value your head.” The men-at-arms pulled their short swords free at the implied threat.

“Step aside if you value yours, hill-man,” the leader snapped, his hand falling towards the bastard sword on his right.

The savage’s answer was to kick the knight into the wall to the staircase’s right. Our mysterious foe hit the mirror so hard, I was amazed the glass didn’t crack. He’d barely bounced off it when Odon’s blade made a clean cut through his neck. Even as the head separated from the body and the body dropped to its knees, I couldn’t help but notice that something didn’t look right. Odon’s sword had an extra foot of reach on it that should have hit the glass. How did it not…

The thought stopped cold as the separated head and body vanished from sight. In the same instant, the knight walked right back out of the ice wall again, none the worse for wear. But, he was pissed off enough to finally pull that sword free. He pointed at us while flicking down his visor.

“Kill them!” The men-at-arms gladly obliged their leader, throwing themselves right at us.

The closest one to me set his sights on the still-cowed Inquisitor. Hate Falon though I did, there are some fates I would wish on no one. I shoulder-rammed his would-be attacker from the side, forcing him to face me. My actions shook Falon out of his paralysis. Using the wall to push himself off, he charged at his would-be killer with raised sword. Stepping out of the way so he could bury his blade into the man-at-arms’ heart, I skewered our foe through the stomach and out the back.

I nearly lost my balance when our vanquished opponent pulled an abrupt disappearing act. The momentum was enough to make me stumble into another pair of men-at-arms, whom Theo had been fending off with his shield and sword. A pair of arrows caught them in the sword hands, making them drop their weapons. A third arrow from Rogue cut across both their necks. They grabbed their throats to contain the bleeding... at least until they too disappeared. The arrows fell to the ground, but their dropped weapons were nowhere to be found.
